#SharePHX February 2019: Chelsea Sutton, CEO/Founder at Consultment AZ
For our first featured community member in the new Social Media Club Phoenix 2019 newsletter “The Share”, we’re starting off strong. She’s one of the movers and shakers in the Greater Phoenix social media marketing industry…she’s Chelsea Sutton, CEO and Founder of ConsultMent AZ, a digital marketing and event production agency in Phoenix.
Let’s get to know here a little better:
City of residence: Cave Creek
I’m active on: Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat
Favorite social media platform for personal use, and why: Instagram, because it allows me to feel creative, write as little or as much as I'd like, and attach a visual to it.
I believe social media exists to connect people, and Instagram provides a visual way to genuinely connect with strangers. I am not a professional photographer or have professional equipment, but thankfully cell phones have such great capabilities (go iPhone). Instagram forces me to put imagery to my thoughts and share them in a creative way (even when the image and the caption don't seem to "fit" - in Instagram, it's easy to create a connection). I love close up photos and pictures of my shoes, ha!
Favorite social media platform for business/client use, and why: Somewhere between Facebook Groups & Instagram. Facebook Groups are such a great tool for communal conversation and group communication and allows for great thread-type conversation especially with the use of video responses and links. Instagram is a favorite for all the reasons mentioned previously, as well as the fact that it has a culture of developing community with strangers. This is still the biggest opportunity for businesses today to develop a tribe from nothing. Because Instagram is link-minimal, it is therefore less spammy / salesy and more connecting. You are forced to write and share from a place of authenticity because it doesn't have options like link-sharing, reposting, etc.
Here's how I ended up working in the social media/digital/content marketing industry: In 2012 I was providing business consulting services for a company that "needed help." They didn't know if their problem was accounting, pricing, or employee turnover. Turns out it was none of the above, but rather marketing. In my undergrad I studied Business Management and Entrepreneurship. I was fascinated with leading people and creating a culture where individuals could thrive, do their best work, and best contribute. In that consulting project I had to teach the business how to amplify their marketing in order to grow their brand. In doing that, I realized that my fascination with leadership and culture was aligned with what good marketing does. Social media is literally the intersection of social and media. We have the opportunity to create connections, share value, and lead people by what we share online. I was hooked.
What’s OUT in social media: Impersonal DMs, especially with terrible CTAs. If you're asking me for anything in a direct message, and I've never heard from you before, git outta hereee!
What’s IN in social media: Selfies & authenticity. Face-first marketing is here to stay. People connect with people first. In order for people to buy, they must first trust. Learn to get comfortable speaking to the camera so that people can get comfortable doing business with you. Chelsea Peitz talks about the biology behind this and how we are hardwired to remember people's faces in her book Talking in Pictures. Show off who you are and the people within you brand. And don't be scared to share the process or the struggle. People can't always connect with the glam of success, but they'll connect with your everyday hustle.
Dream company or client to work for or with: Hardest question of the survey right here. The best clients are the best because of the people and intention behind them. I'm sure there's a few cool people here in AZ I haven't met yet. I grew up in the horse industry, specifically a sport called Reining (look it up - it's fun). I would love to do the marketing for their 2 largest events - the NRHA Futurity and the NRHA Derby (think Super Bowl but for Reining)! Also, Phoenix Rising Football Club would be cool ;)
If I could change ONE thing about ANY social media channel it would be: The ability to summarize or better control / batch notifications. I LOVE working natively in the social apps themselves, but the overwhelm of singular notifications, and the limit of them in apps like Instagram (where you can only see like 150 before it cuts it off) can be frustrating. I would love to be able to customize how I summarize notifications.
The biggest missed opportunity in social media is: Comments and DMs. The power of direct 1-to-1 communication is the biggest tool we (as individuals and businesses) have. I have seen huge success (more followers, more engagement, more conversion) in taking time away from content creation and allocating it to in-app communication (particularly with strangers).
Most Instagram-worthy spot in the Valley is: Deskhub's Balloon room (@deskhub), The blue wall at Sip Coffee Old Town (@sipcoffeeandbeer_), my driver's seat in the car when the sun's out (am I right), any saguaro on any hiking trail (I love the ones near cave creek)!
The place I check in most on social media is: Independent coffee shops. Hands down. Peixoto, Sip Old town & Shea, Maverick, Echo, JoJo Coffeehouse
Favorite hashtag to follow on IG/Twitter: IG: #CountrySwingDancing / #MarketingSociety (shameless plug - these are all people that have taken my classes), #yesphx, #HandWritingGoals
Some social media accounts that are MUST follows:
